I wish you a Merry Christmas spent in love, peace, and harmony. Should you be spending it alone, know that you are one of many who, by choice or circumstances, are staying and keeping others safe during this holiday season.
I, for myself, am spending it in loving solitude in my new home (more to come in future posts). The fireplace is crackling, the hot chocolate is laced with rum and I am reading “A Promise Land” by former President Obama. I believe that I doze off every couple of hours to make up for the last three months of intense activity at work and the added stress of moving.
I know that, although I am by myself, I am not alone. The peace surrounding me tells me that the ancestors and the angels are near. Although I miss my children, I know that this decision is the best we have made and that there will be happier times ahead, times made sweeter by a sharper realignment of our priorities and what really matters.
And what really mattered this year was to donate rather than to shop. My blessings are many and “my cup runneth over”. It was not a hard decision for my heart really was not into shopping. Not because I am sad, but because of the urgent realization that there is so much need out there and the time has come to embrace our common humanity and alleviate in as much as we can others’ suffering.
And what better time to start than during the Christmas season? And what better way to acknowledge and start a chain of empathy and compassion than to highlight Jaye Sanders’ touching kindness towards a stranger. Upon witnessing the desperation of an older homeless man whose only pair of shoes had been stolen and seeing him run after the thief barefoot in the sleet and snow of a cold Michigan December day, Jaye drove to a shoe store and in less than thirty minutes had gifted the older man with a new pair of sturdy and warm boots.
I wish I could claim Jaye as a close friend, but it is not the case. Jaye and I met through a mutual friend and since then became Facebook friends. I read the story on social media and could not help to share it, hoping that it will brighten your day as it has mine and hoping that it will start a chain of giving. Thank you, Jaye, for your inspiring gesture.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas spent in love, peace, and harmony.
