Charleston, May 2024

The potential title could have easily been “South of Broad.” My first encounter with Pat Conroy’s writing brought immense joy through his vivid, humorous, and dramatic portrayal of characters and places in the South of Broad area of Charleston. Charleston, as the backdrop that inspired and nurtured such a talented writer, left a lasting impression on me. Therefore, when my adult children decided to surprise me with a birthday trip, I chose this Southern city that I had yet to explore, with the sole purpose of uncovering the essence of the neighborhood life depicted in Conroy’s story in South of Broad.
Thanks to my children, Charleston revealed more than just memories from a book, as I had to comply with their plan to properly celebrate their mother’s birthday. The favorite daughter had meticulously planned our itinerary and skillfully guided us through Charleston, considering my passion for good food. As a self-proclaimed foodie, she had thoroughly researched Charleston’s remarkable culinary scene, organizing our tours around top-rated lunch and dinner spots recommended by her peers, akin to planning a military operation.
Before delving into the city’s culinary delights, she indulged my wish to see the ocean. At the airport, the rental car agent persuaded me to opt for a convertible “to please” my thoughtful children who wanted to spend quality time with me. Although an economy compact SUV would have sufficed, we found ourselves cruising in a Mustang convertible on our Charleston adventure. Our journey commenced at Folly Beach, the nearest beach to the city, where we savored our first meal. Returning in time, we experienced a lively Saturday evening on King Street, surrounded by recent college graduates and other enthusiastic visitors enjoying the city’s restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Charleston exudes a vibrant weekend atmosphere, akin to the lively ambiance of the New Orleans French Quarter but with a more subdued charm.
A tranquil Sunday followed, with visits to the downtown market, the historic French Quarter, and shopping along King Street. The afternoon concluded at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, a significant landmark in Conroy’s novel. Dinner was a delightful affair at a charming French restaurant known for its daily changing menu, offering a selection of appetizers, entrees, desserts, and an impressive wine list.
On Monday, we couldn’t resist exploring South of Broad. Parking at the Boardwalk, we embarked on a 2-hour stroll along the picturesque streets lined with mansions boasting flower gardens and fountains worthy of a Southern Home magazine. Immersed in the novel’s essence, I vowed to revisit it once back home.
Sullivan’s Island welcomed us with warm, clear saltwater pools created by the receding tide, perfect for relaxation. Lunch at an Italian restaurant featured freshly made pasta, including a delectable dish of Grouper and Swordfish paired with intricate pasta shapes, a true culinary delight.
During our final evening together, we reminisced about my children’s childhood experiences, where I was reminded that my portrayal of being “cool” was not as accurate as I claimed. According to the favorite daughter, I ran a tight ship, which seemed to have paid off. We delved into our love for reading, despite having diverse preferences, and shared intimate memories that, though seemingly inconsequential in the past, now hold profound significance in our present lives.
I revisited one of my cherished French books by German Author Christine Singer, titled “Ou cours-tu? Ne sais-tu pas que le ciel est en toi?” which translates to “Where are you running? Don’t you know that the heavens are within you?” I wish this book was accessible to English readers, as it served as a perfect reset during my birthday celebration. To all my fellow Taureans, I wish you a fulfilling year filled with joy and purpose, finding solace in the simplicity of reading.
Much Love,
